AfC/JE-Key Docs-Psychotherapy posts

Following some national consistency into the outcomes of psychotherapy posts, carried out by the Job Evaluation Group (JEG) there are some recommendations for NHS employers.

It is recommended that NHS employers should revisit psychotherapy outcomes and satisfy themselves that they have matched these posts to the appropriate profiles.

Psychotherapy posts should be matched to clinical psychologist profiles, however the monitoring showed that:

  • in some NHS organisations, for band 7 outcomes a significant proportion had been matched inappropriately to counsellor profile
  • in a number of cases the scoring on the Knowledge, Training and Experience (KTE factor has been combined.
  • for bands 8a and 8b, the psychotherapy outcome had been correctly matched to clinical psychology profiles and there was no evidence of inappropriate matching

The flag on the front page of the Clinical Psychologists, Counsellors and Psychotherapist profiles reads as follows:

  • Note 1 – Clinical Psychologist profiles reviewed March 2005. These profiles are intended to apply to all Psychologists jobs in the health service, to counsellor other than genetic counsellor jobs, for which separate profiles are published in HSS. GC and to psychotherapy jobs. These are considered to be a single occupational grouping for matching purposes.
  • Note 2 – Although training routes are different for clinical psychologists and psychotherapists, the levels of knowledge required are equivalent, so psychotherapist jobs can be matched to clinical psychology profiles on an equivalent basis for the KTE factor.
